ANNUAL REPORT 2025 / 2026 Unlocking New Possibilities for Children Two years after announcing the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital-University of Alberta Research Chair in Neurorehabilitation, Dr. Hossein Rouhani continues to shape new possibilities for children with complex physical and neurological disabilities. Children know where they want to go. They know what they want to say. They have ideas, curiosity, and dreams just like anyone else. But for children living with complex disabilities, interacting with the world isn’t always as simple as willing their bodies to move. It’s a challenge that drives Dr. Rouhani, a biomedical engineer and professor at the University of Alberta Department of Mechanical Engineering. As the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital-University of Alberta Research Chair in Neurorehabilitation, he’s leading research in brain-computer interface (BCI) technology specifically designed for children. While the technology has existed for decades, its use in pediatric rehabilitation is still in its early stages. “Children are not simply adults,” Rouhani explains. “Their brains are still developing, their attention spans are different, and their abilities and needs change as they grow. Many existing BCI systems were designed using data from adults sitting in highly controlled laboratory environments.”
