For Baldini, the relationship is built on understanding.
“Sometimes my insights as I live with disability
help her feel more heard. Having someone that
understands and is able to communicate on that
level.” His experience has also changed how he
thinks about parenting, and life in general. While
there are things he may not be able to do in the
same way as others, he’s learned that doing things
differently doesn’t mean doing less. “When we’re
wheeling through the streets of Italy and baby’s
on his chest, she sees the world from a different
perspective,” says MacMillan.
That perspective is something Baldini hopes to pass
on to others and his children. “It’s a new experience
I’m learning, but I think what really matters is to be
there and be human,” he says. “I may not be able to
do all the things in the world, but I can still be there,
provide, and advocate.”
His experience as a musician, entrepreneur, and
father has also taught him that life doesn’t always
look the way you expect it to. Sometimes, you have
to find a new way to play. Sometimes, you have
to build the thing you need. And sometimes you’re
guiding others along their path.
While there
are things he
may not be
able to do in
the same way
as others, he’s
learned that
doing things
differently
doesn’t mean
doing less.
