The Glenrose therapeutic pool provides essential rehabilitation for thousands of Albertans each year.
From children recovering from injury to adults regaining strength and independence after life-altering illness or diagnosis, aquatic therapy helps patients move safely earlier, reduce pain, and rebuild confidence.

After the pool’s closure in November 2024 due to structural failure, access to this important therapy was lost. The Glenrose Hospital Foundation is raising $6.5 million to rebuild a modern, fully accessible aquatic facility that will meet the diverse needs of patients now and into the future.
“The Glenrose’s therapeutic pool has, for decades, played a special role in helping Albertans living with lifelong conditions, or recovering from illness or injury, regain their independence. Its absence has been felt in a very real way — a steady reminder of how important this pool is to a hospital as unique as the Glenrose; a place we’re lucky to have in Alberta,” shares Mark Korthuis, President & CEO at the Glenrose Hospital Foundation.
The new facility will include not one, but three therapy pools, including:
- A mid-sized therapy pool for group sessions and advanced rehabilitation
- Two smaller precision therapy pools, each equipped with underwater treadmills and resistance jets
- Gradual depth transitions (0 to 7 feet) to accommodate a wide range of abilities
And, it will feature a universal and accessible design:
- Fully accessible changing areas for patients and families
- Comfortable viewing spaces for caregivers and loved ones
- Adjustable poolside equipment to support diverse patient needs
On January 7, 2026, the Government of Alberta announced $3.25 million in funding towards the $6.5 million redevelopment of the therapeutic pool, a major step forward to restoring aquatic therapy for Albertans.
